Malawian Journals Project

The observational field journal project collects data on the content of informal conversations in social networks. It provides unique information on the perspective of rural Malawians on topics such as livelihoods, family matters such as marriage, divorce, and the care of children, and on responses to the AIDS epidemic. IKI has pioneered this new method of qualitative data collection, called hearsay ethnography, together with faculty from the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania.
